Analysis Shows Protecting Tropical Forests Will Boost Revenue for Brazil by US $146-$306 billion
A report released today by Avoided Deforestation Partners finds that gradually ending deforestation by 2030 will substantially increase gross revenue for Brazil.
Building on other published research, the report finds that Brazilian agriculture has significant competitive advantages, including relatively constant temperatures and tens of millions of hectares of degraded land that can easily be put into production as demand increases. The country also has significant capacity to increase the efficiency, productivity and profitability of its cattle sector. As a result, non-deforestation Brazilian agriculture is well-positioned to benefit from tropical forest protection measures.

Farms Here, Forests There: Tropical Deforestation and U.S. Competitiveness in Agriculture and TimberDestruction of the world’s tropical forests by overseas timber, agriculture, and cattle operations has led to a dramatic expansion in production of commodities that compete directly with U.S. products. Protecting tropical forests will boost revenues for producers by up to $221.3 billion, while also dramatically benefiting farmers, ranchers, and landowners in tropical countries by giving them the opportunity to earn significant additional income through improving conservation practices on their land....

How Protecting Rainforests Benefits Farmers, Ranchers, Landowners, and Forest Dependent Communities in Tropical Countries
Although this report focuses mainly on the benefits of protecting tropical forests for farmers and ranchers in this country, the benefits to farmers, ranchers, and landowners in tropical countries will be even greater. By providing an additional source of income for improving conservation practices, financing rainforest protection will generate a major additional source of income for landowners and forest-dependent communities alike. According to a recent World Bank analysis of tropical agriculture, landowners who choose to conserve their forests can expect to receive $10,000 per hectare of forested land, far exceeding income from deforestation, and providing an important resource for development.... read more
